He commanded a brigade at the Battle of Jemappes, and in the campaign of 1793 distinguished himself at the Action of Aldenhoven and the Battle of Neerwinden.
In 1797 he was sent to arrest the victorious march of General Bonaparte in Italy, and he conducted the retreat of the over-matched Austrians with the highest skill.
In the strange plans produced in Vienna for the campaign of 1859, and in the almost unintelligible Battle of Montebello in the same year.

For his performance at Milan he received a public commendation and for his heroic acts during the attack on Vienna he was honored with the award of the Military Merit Cross.
Following the death in action of the commander of infantry regiment number 9 during the battle of Montebello, Graf Thun was transferred to this regiment as the interim commander and promoted to Oberstleutnant on the 1st of July 1859, shortly followed by his promotion to Oberst on the 13th of July 1859.

After the battle of Montebello of the 20th of May, the allied Franco-Sardinian’s plan was to move towards Novara and then to the capital city of Lombardy: Milan.
The 4th Division of General Cialdini was positioned between Palestro and the road that led to Robbio, the piedmontese 10th infantry regiment on the left, the 9th regiment to defend Cascina San Pietro, and the 3rd Zouaves regiment on the right, on the big island called Sesietta.
Also the King of Sardinia, Vittorio Emanuele II° was in Palestro, and followed the first part of the battle from the tower of the church of the village.
