The local authorities had the idea that someone should follow the same course as the original soldier and the townsfolk of Morat, Fribourg and all villages along the route should encourage the runner as he passed covering a distance of 16 kms.

The Burgundians tried to avoid large scale battles and preferred to stick to seiges and skirmishes.
The Burgundian cross-bowmen shot messages into the town with notes attached saying that all defenders of the town would be caught and hung by their throats.
When the defenders of the town did not show up to fight, the Burgundians thought that the town people were afraid and there would not be a battle.

All the Burgundians who stood to fight, or could be overtaken by the cavalry of the enemy, were massacred; so that 'cruel as at Morat' became a proverb.

Having rebuilt his army after the defeat at Granson in March, Charles laid siege of Morat, only thirty miles from Berne, hoping to provoke a Swiss attack.
Using the woods as cover, the Swiss army was able to do just that, having marched along the front of the Dukes left and centre in the cover of the woods.
Meanwhile, Duke Charles had allowed the bulk of his troops to return to their camps, leaving his fortifications lightly defended, and the sudden Swiss attack soon overwhelmed them, after which the battle was lost, and unlike at Granson, large numbers of casualties were inflicted on the Duke's trapped army.
