The Battle of Mohi (or Sajo river) on April 11th 1241 was the main battle between the Mongols and the Kingdom of Hungary during the Mongol invasion of Europe.
The battle was initiated by the Mongols, who sensed opportunity in the political turmoil caused by their successful 1283 invasion of the Pagan Empire in the Battle of Bhamo.

Ugrin Csák, the archbishop of Kalocsa, also tried to attack a Mongol contingent, but he was lured to a swamp and his armoured cavalry became irretrievably stuck in it.
It is more likely that their original plan was to attack the Hungarians while crossing the river just as in the case of the Battle of the Kalka River.

The Battle of Muhi – marking the beginning of the Mongol invasion which had a disastrous effect on Hungary – took place in Borsod county, near the village of Muhi, on April 11, 1241.
Before the battle of Mohács (1526), which marks the beginnig of the Ottoman occupation of Hungary (lasting for over 160 years) the county had 13 castles, 13 market towns (oppidum, including Miskolc and Mezőkövesd) and 250 villages, owned by 235 different feudal lords including dioceses and monasteries.
The steward of the county was the captain of the Castle of Diósgyőr.

A fresh hand-to-hand battle they werent so proficient in, especially near their homelands when on the first mongol invasion their forces were also defeated by samurai, though Japan had heavy losses and if it wasnt for the kamikaze they would have been overwhelmed.
This requires a long campaign with plenty of sieges, battles and centuries of warfare against an enemy who is flexible by using the seas to supply, reinforce and "counter-crusade" from another directory.
The battle of Liegnitz also had higher losses for the mongols then expected due to the teutonic knights who simply wont die once dismounted, the show of European prowess in armor and in heavy hand-to-hand combat, in which its possible thats how the heavy losses are accumulated.

The king escaped with the help of his faithful and brave bodyguard, but the rest of the army was either killed without mercy by the Mongols or drowned in the rivers while attempting an escape.
