Battle of Naulochus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The naval Battle of Naulochus was fought on 3 September 36 BC between the fleets of Sextus Pompeius and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, near Naulochus, Sicily.
In July 36 BC the two fleets sailed from Italy, and another fleet, provided by the third triumvir Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, sailed from Africa, to attack Sextus' stronghold in Sicily.
In August Agrippa defeated, for the first time, Sextus in a naval battle near Mile (modern Milazzo); the same month Octavian was defeated and seriously wounded in a battle near Taormina.

 Antony, Cleopatra, Augustus Overview
In 33, when the Triumvirate officially expired, Octavian held the consulship: he was then able to present Antony as a private Roman citizen acting without the authority of the state and to contrast his own position as loyal servant of the Republic.
The battle of Actium was, then, something of a fiasco: a failed tactical retreat.
At the same time he took advantage of people's weariness to establish the elaborate fiction that the various battles of the years 42-31 had been fought in the name of restoring the Roman Republic to its former grandeur.
