This development is helped by the richness of the Naxos subsoil, the abundant marble that was the main material used along with emery, which was used for the final polishing of the marble.
The sculpture of the ancient period is represented in Naxos by the two huge half finished "kouros" (nude male statues), which rest in a lying down position in the area of the ancient marble quarry, the "kouros" of Melanes and the "kouros" of Apollona (6th century B.C.).
The types on the Archaic statuses of Naxos, which depict a Kantharos bordered by an ivy wreath, from the two handles of which hangs a bunch of grapes, are associated with the cult of Dionysos.

The result was that, in the cases of Naxos and Thasos, for instance, the leagues resources were employed not against the Persians but against recalcitrant Greek islands, and that the Greek ideal of separate autonomy was outraged.
The indolent lonians had seen the result of secession at Naxos and rebellion at Thasos; the Athenian fleet was perpetually on guard in the Aegean.
None the less the known facts justify a large number of inferences as to the significance of events which are on the surface merely a part of the individual foreign policy of Athens.

Chios   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In 412 they sided with the Peloponnesians, in the 19th year of the war which Athens had been waging against Sparta and her allies.
At the end of the war the Chians revolted from Sparta and, after the battle of Naxos (376), became an ally of Athens once more.
Oppressed now by Athens, as she had been by Sparta, Chios made an alliance with Thebes in 363 and defended herself successfully against the Athenian general, Chares; and in 355 Athens was forced to recognize the island's independence.

Athens might fairly insist that the protection of the Aegean would become impossible if some of the chief islands were liable to be used as piratical strcngholds, and further that it was only right that all should contribute in some way to the security which all enjoyed.
Even in 425 Naxos and Andros paid only 15 talents, while Athens had just raised an eisphora (income tax) from her own citizens of 200 talents, Moreover it would seem that a tribute which yielded less than the 5% tax of 411 could not have been unreasonable.

Naxos had been reissuing records from the 1930s by the likes of Yehudi Menuhin, Edwin Fisher and Pablo Casals, on the not entirely unsound grounds they were out of copyright.
However, EMI had a cow, brought legal action and a New York court has ruled that even though the recordings are out of copyright, they're still protected by "common law".
