Tactics(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Although occurring in the happenstance of battle in earlier engagements, breaking the line was first successfully introduced as a preordained part of a battle plan by British Admiral Lord George Rodney in the War of American Independence.
British tactics called for the attack to be pressed from the Weather Gage (or upwind) and for the guns to be aimed at the hull of the enemy --between wind and water -- killing the crew and damaging the hull.
British tactics, therefore, generally complimented the desires of the French, who favored the leeward position and appreciated the fact that their rigging and sails were not being shot to pieces in the initial stages of the battle.
