This 2,100 square foot parcel was donated to the Newtown Historic Association from the late Grace R. "Missy" Boone in 1972 for the enjoyment of the community.
In April of 1867, a number of prominent residents of Newtown and Wrightstown Townships applied to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for, and were granted, a charter to establish a turnpike road from the Anchor Tavern in Wrightstown to Newtown.
Newtown was the county seat of Bucks County from 1726 to 1813 before it was moved to Doylestown.

NEWTOWN - A builder who claimed that the township's controversial development moratorium had tied up plans for his vacant property could be compensated for his losses under a ruling issued this week in Delaware County Court.
In a three-page ruling, Battle said Newtown Township was legally entitled to declare the moratorium but should pay for the impact on property owners.
During a building boom that was transforming the once-rural community, Newtown declared the moratorium on Nov. 23, 1998, to rewrite its comprehensive plan and enact new zoning ordinances.

The expedition occurred during the summer of 1779 and only had one major battle, at Newtown along the Chemung River in western New York, in which the Tories and Iroquois were decisively defeated.
On July 3, 1778, Colonel Butler led his Rangers with a force of Senecas (led by Cornplanter) and Cayugas in a surprise attack on Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley (along the Susquehanna River near present Wilkes-Barre), practically annihilating the 360 armed Patriot defenders of Forty Fort.
Although captured Patriots who had fought in the battle were apparently all executed, Butler insisted that non-combatants had not been killed, despite widespread rumors to the contrary.

Near the site of Elmira occurred on the 29th of August 1779 the battle of Newtown, in which General John Sullivan decisively defeated a force of Indians and Tories under Sir John Johnson and Joseph Brant.
There were some settlers here at the close of the War of Independence, but no permanent settlement was made until 1788.
The village was incorporated as Newtown in 1815, and was reincorporated as Elmira in 1828.

Posted - December 04 2004 : 10:44:51 PM Kurt, the date is not set in stone just yet, as we are in negotiations with the New York State Parks Department, but the annual re-enactment of the Battle of Newtown is usually held the last weekend in August.
Although the website has not yet been updated with the schedule for next year, you can keep an eye on www.chemungvalley.org Hopefully soon after the first of the year new information will be available.
There is also talk that an 18th century Weekend that is not open to the public may be held at the Indian Village at Newtown, the 1st weekend in August.

 History of the Chemung Valley
Brule was an emissary and translator for the French explorer Samuel Champlain and was sent into the region to enlist the aid of the Andaste people (who inhabited the region at the time) in a battle between the French and the Five Nations of the Iroquois.
Though the Five Nations would prevail in the battle and would eventually drive off the Andaste people, Brule's descriptive account of the Andastes, their many villages and the countryside would be invaluable to historians and anthropologists for years to come.
One notable settlement five or six miles up from the mouth of the Newtown Creek took it's name from pile of large bones the earliest settlers encountered along the creek.
