The battle of Macroom was fought in 1650, near Macroom, county Cork, in southern Ireland, during the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland.
The Battle of Tara Hill was fought on 26 May 1798 between British forces and Irish rebels involved in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, resulting in a heavy defeat for the rebels and the end of the rebellion in County Meath.
The battle of Ballyellis on 30th June 1798 was a clash during the 1798 rebellion between a surviving column of the dispersed Wexford rebel army and pursuing British forces which resulted in a total victory for the rebels.

A poorly trained Jacobite army which advanced on them from Dublin on July 28th 1689 was defeated at the battle of Newtownbutler, many of the Jacobite's troops fled as the first shots were fired and up to 1500 of them were hacked down or drowned when pursued by the Williamite cavalry.
For this reason, the battles of the Williamite war are still commemorated by Protestant unionists in Ulster, principally by the Orange Order on the Twelfth of July.

Meanwhile, armed Williamite civilians from Enniskillen were carrying out raids, and a Jacobite army which advanced on them from Dublin on July 28th 1689 was defeated at the battle of Newtownbutler.
After some resistance near Newry the Jacobites withdrew to the south bank of the River Boyne, and on July 1st were defeated at the Battle of the Boyne.

Tadhg or Teige O'Kelly, one of the commanders of the Connaught contingent of Brian Boru's army at the battle of Clontarf, was of this ancient family.
He turned out to be a gambler and bon viveur and there is a vivid account of his excesses throughout the 1790s, culminating in the fire of 1803, the arrival of his creditors in 1812 and his expiry in 1814.

The Clock Tower at the head of the Main Street is all that remains of the Old Parish Church, rebuilt by Pat Delany DD, Rector in 1734.
This monument is the best known symbol of Irvinestown and it is reported that a section of the Williamite army worshipped and quartered here while on their way to the Battle of the Boyne.
The Graves of many of the United Kingdom, American, Australian and Canadian Airmen who died during the World War II Battle of the Atlantic can be seen in the graveyards at the local Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic Church.

The battle began on Tuesday 1st July, with an artillery barrage and William decided on a frontal assault across the river at Oldbridge, while he sent his right wing upstream in a feint which successfully drew most of the French away.
The Dutch Blue Guards had to wade up to their armpits at Oldbridge, fiercely opposed by Tyrconnell's cavalry, but in the end the Williamites triumphed by superior firepower and weight of numbers.
The Battle of the Boyne did not end the war in Ireland for the Irish Jacobites, and the French retired in good order to fight doggedly behind the Shannon River for another year.

The Battle of Newtownbutler was fought before the arrival of Williamite troops from England.
In June Wynne's dragoons were among the forty squadrons of cavalry and dragoons which, in addition to thirty battalions of infantry, were assembled by the Williamite commander, Ginkel, for the purpose of forcing the crossing of the Shannon to Athlone.
The 5th Royal Irish Lancers were involved in many other battles during the campaign in South Africa including the Defence of Ladysmith and it was during one of these confrontations that the a Royal Irish Lancer was to receive Britain's highest military award - the Victoria Cross.

Although we all felt some disappointment at the final two results, our forth place finish is in fact one hell of an achievement, and now sets us up nicely for the draw for the European Championships in January.
