The Battle of the Scheldt in October 1944 was fought primarily on Dutch soil, but with the intent of opening the waterway to Antwerp.

The Battle of Nieuwpoort, between a Dutch army under Maurits of Nassau and a Spanish army under Albrecht of Austria, took place on July 2, 1600 in the Belgian city Nieuwpoort.
Although Maurice had driven a Spanish army from the field, a rare feat in the late 16th century, the battle achieved nothing.

Nieuwpoort is one of the smallest Dutch fortified towns and was founded around 1200 by the Lords of Liesveld and Langerak.
In the 17th century, on the recommendation of Prince William of Orange, Nieuwpoort was given ramparts and canals in a fortress with six bastions.

The village of Nieuwpoort proper is not located on the sea shore, but the municipality is mostly popular for its sea resort, Nieuwpoort-Bad, built from 1864 to 1893 by Baron Benjamin Crombez, owner of the lands on the sea shore.
As a port city, Nieuwpoort was often besieged, siezed and trashed, for instance by the French in 1213, 1299 and 1328, and the troops from Ghent in 1383.
The city of Nieuwpoort was shelled by the German artillery and nearly destroyed, but the front line was stabilized until the victorious breakout by the allied troops in 1918.
