The bridge of Tourville on the river Odon cost many casualties to the 15th Scottish Infantry Division.

  The Battle for Hill 112 - 1944
During the breakout battles of Normady, the Battle for Hill 112 was viewed as critical to both the British attackers and German defenders.
It was here that the British breakout came to a halt, following the crossing of the Odon, and the fighting around the high ground of the infamous Hill absorbed several British formations during the summer of 1944.
The Battles for Hill 112 were symbollic for both sides during the early days of the Normandy invasion of 1944.

The tanks took the direction of the castle of Parfouru on Odon, where, after repairs were made to the 14 survivors, they attacked under the command of Hannes Philipsen; four tanks from the south and ten by Clémenceau Street.
However, it is also true that in the close quarters of this battle, the British 17-pounder was capable of defeating the armour on Wittmann's tank.

The Battle for Caen from June to August 1944 was a battle between the Allied and German forces during World War II's Battle of Normandy.
From 8 to 19 July there was a battle near Tilly-sur-Seulles between parts of the 30th British Army Corps and the German Panzer Lehr Division, which is usually known as the Battle of Tilly-sur-Seulles.
Operation Overlord and the battles in Normandy successfully gave the Allies a foothold in France, which led to the liberation of the rest of Europe.

attle Honours are conferred by the Sovereign and recognise the presence of a regiment at, and its participation in, a particular battle or campaign.
Some of our most prized Battle Honours, such as Gibraltar and Quebec, were not authorised until many years after the event, while hard-fought victories such as Namur 1695, Germantown 1777 and Alkmaar 1799 have never been honoured.

 The battle for Hill 112
From this elevation the entire valleys of the Odon and Orne could be seen, and the Germans said, "He who controls Hill 112 controls Normandy." Certainly they clung to it desperately, and when they were driven off counter-attacked at once to regain possession.
They reached their objectives at the crest of the hill, although for several hours fierce close-quarter battles continued in the wheat where SS troops manned concealed machine-gun nests and refused to surrender even when wounded.
The next year when there was an opportunity to compare notes with the 9th SS Panzer Division, it was revealed that in the battle for Hill 112 casualties reduced their strength to five or six per company.

In glorious weather, we walked the Battle for Normandy over a rewarding 5 days; our group came from the glamorous corners of the earth such as Ontario Canada, County Down Northern Ireland and Wolverhampton (well nearly all glamorous).
Our billet was the 3* Mercure Hotel at Ouistreham, a minute from Sword Beach, the surrounding restaurants and bars negated the need to travel far in the evenings to socialise, it is definitely a spot we would use again.
That evening we toasted the men of Operation Overlord as the group dined together, make no mistake this was not just an ordinary Normandy Battlefield tour that travels from Museum to Memorial to Café, this was for battlefield enthusiasts and we can’t wait for the next one.

Listed next are some battles of the 33rd and 76th which are not shown on the Colours but should not, on that account, be forgotten.
Other battles deserving to be remembered are Valenza (1705); Alcantara (1706) and Saragossa (1710), all of which were convincing victories.
Eventually no less than ten Battle Honours were awarded to the 33rd and 76th for their services during the long period of the wars against Napoleon.
