In 1440 it participated in the foundation of the Prussian Union which led to the Thirteen Years War (1454-1644) and the incorporation of Gdansk Pomerania, under direct rule of the Polish Crown.
The city was taken by Polish and Soviet forces on March 30, 1945 after a fierce battle with the defending Germans.

At the naval battle of Oliva, on 28th Nov, 1627 the Swedish naval forces blockading Gdansk was repelled and severly defeated by the Polish flotilla.
To be truthful, the battles the Swedes did win against the Poles on open battle were almost never fully exploited because the Poles able to retreat with most of their army.

Famous is the story of the sea battle of Oliwa in 1627.
In this battle the Dutch Admiral Arend Dijckmans (in Polish literature referred to as Arend Dickmann) led the Polish fleet against the invading Swedes under Klaas Fleming.
He won the battle but unfortunately lost his life and was buried with full honours in the Maria church in Gdañsk on the 4th of December 1627.
