BATTLE CREEK, Michigan (CNN) -- In an effort to cuts costs and compete in a slow cereal market, Kellogg Co. said Thursday it may close part of its Battle Creek, Michigan, cereal plant, eliminating up to 700 jobs.
The company, which is based in Battle Creek, said it would make a final decision on the cuts after discussions with the union that represents the hourly workers.
For years plant tours were a major tourist attraction until they ended in the 1980s.

Biocontrol—using a nonnative plant species' natural enemies to combat it—is just one method that most federal agencies, including the National Park Service, are employing to curb the rising problem.
The fast-growing plant has invaded wetlands in all of the lower 48 states except Florida since being introduced from Europe in the early 1800s as both a contaminant in ship ballast and as an herbal treatment for ailments including dysentery and ulcers.

We found that applications of entomopathogenic nematodes to boxwood plants in an arboretum were as effective in reducing populations of several genera of plant-parasitic nematodes as was a chemical nematicide.
In contrast to plant- arasitic nematodes, non-stylet bearing nematodes were not affected by f EPNs.

 Kellogg to lay off hundreds at Michigan plant
The giant cereal maker Kellogg announced Thursday that it was considering closing part of its giant Battle Creek, Michigan plant and eliminating 700 of the 1,100 jobs there as part of a plan to save between $35 million and $45 million a year.
Four percent of Battle Creek's 55,000 people work at Kellogg, the town's biggest employer, and thousands of others work at packaging, printing and other companies that supply the cereal maker.
Battle Creek Mayor Ted Dearing said the latest layoffs would be more devastating than last December's because many of the workers would not be able to find other jobs that pay similar wages and benefits.

Fire crews were forced to use water tankers to put the fire out because the lack of nearby fire hydrants.
The fire was contained within the plant and did not threaten any homes.
