The Battle of Peebles' Farm, September 29 to October 1, was really the second section of a two-part struggle.
The Battle of Hatcher's Run, February 5 to 7, 1865, was the result of a further drive by the Northern forces in their attempt to encircle Petersburg.
The Battle of Hatcher's Run was another fight in the constant movement of the Union Army to the west after June 18, 1864.

True, there were lots of other battles with high casualties and missed opportunities, but at Shiloh the basic error was so egregious, its commander so fortunate, and his excuse for the error so lame, that this battle deserves even more critical attention than it already gets.

 Coll. 109: William T. Ackerson (1838 - 1923) Papers, 1861 - 1914
He rose to the rank of sergeant and was present at the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861 although he did not see action as his regiment was held in reserve.
During the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, he was involved in the disastrous Battle of the Crater, July 30, 1864, where he became separated from his regiment, not rejoining it until after nightfall.
Ackerson became a prisoner of war on September 30, 1864 at the Battle of Peebles Farm, Virginia when the 51st was surrounded and compelled to surrender.

He was made a First Lieutenant in 1864 and won the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Peebles' Farm when he dragged a fellow Union officer to the rear preventing him from being captured.
He remained in the regular army after the close of the Civil War and made a lieutenant colonel in the 11th U.S. Infantry in February 1897.

He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel of Volunteers, September 1864 for "gallant and distinguished services at the Battle of Peebles Farm, Virginia," and Colonel of Volunteers, March 29, 1865 for "faithful an meritorious service during the campaign ending in the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia." He was honorably mustered out on July 16, 1865.
Another note of interest: During the Civil War he served in the 20th Maine with Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and was present with the Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, when they defended the Union flank from a Confederate assault on Little Round Top.
He was graduated at Bowdoin in 1858, entered the National Army in August, 1862, as a Captain of Maine volunteers, was promoted through the intermediate grades to Colonel, and from October, 1863, till February, 1865, commanded a regiment in the Army of the Potomac.
