It is doubtful he was on Peleliu at the time of the battle as he survived to surrender Imperial Japanese Navy forces in the Palau Islands to the Americans in April 1945.
With the north of Peleliu secure, the only part still in Japanese hands was the pocket of resistance centred on the Umurbrogol Mountains in an area of about 1,000 yards by 500 yards, running from Baldy Hill in the north to Five Sisters in the south.

It is my understanding that this little island of Peleliu is now referred to as the "paradise island of the Pacific." Hundreds of thousands of vacationers (many Japanese) go there annually to enjoy the plush 5-star hotels, golf courses, etc. To me, I will always see it painted in the color of "red," American blood.

While definitely not the most bloodest battle in the Pacific (I think of Iwo Jima or Okinawa before Peleliu), this was a hard fought battle, won by the superb courage and skills of the US Marine Corps.
Good Pacific War battle book should have chapters on the Japanese side as well as the Americans because only then, can there be justice done to the battle and blood spilled.
The battle for Peleliu was supposed to last for only about 72 hours as the few hundred or maybe a couple of thousand Japanese were defeated.

Although he survived the battle, the Marine passed away a few years ago but I was able to find the son.

Peleliu holds special meaning for you since your dad was in combat there, and you have an appreciation for what he and his brother Marines and Soldiers did there.
Peleliu keeps drawing me back as it is a beautifully preserved WWII battlefield..a veritable time capsule.
The battle went on for months, and they were still pulling enemy soldiers out of the caves in 1947, so the idea of a traditional "front" does not apply to the network of caves and tunnels on Peleliu.

The Peleliu battlefield today has considerable physical evidence of the battle, including about 100 identified individual cave sites occupied by the defending Japanese troops, as well as pill boxes, casemates, and large military equipment, both American and Japanese, which played a direct role in the battle for Peleliu.
