On October 12, while Gen. George Washington was evacuating his force from Harlem Heights, the British force, commanded by Gen. William Howe, moved against the Americans by landiing a large number of troops at Pells Point, north of the city.
Pell's Point was a peninsula on Pelham Bay and a more advantageous site from which to attack the Americans.
The British landed at Throg's Neck on October 12, then withdrew to land on Pell's Point.
