Plovdiv (Greek:Philippopolis, Φιλιππουπολης) is a city in Bulgaria and the capital of the Plovdiv Oblast (district).
While the city was liberated from the Ottomans during the Battle of Plovdiv in 1878, it was not originally part of the newly established Principality of Bulgaria.
Plovdiv is at the center of an important agricultural region, so that food processing is the most important industry.

It is the administrative centre of Plovdiv Province in southern Bulgaria, as well as the largest and most important city of the historical region of Thrace, famous for its ancient and diverse culture and millenary history.
In 1263 Plovdiv was conquered by the restored Byzantine Empire and remained in Byzantine hands until it was re-conquered by George Terter II of Bulgaria in 1322.

On June 21, members of the Jehovah's Witnesses were expelled from the city of Petrich for distributing literature without being registered with the municipality, although the church does have central government registration.

F1 World Championship for powerboating was officially declared null and void after a driver protest forced the promoter to rule that the race would become an exhibition and wouldn’t be declared an official event.
The reason for situation developed when certain pilots believed that the 2-pin 1 kilometer course was, in their opinion, too narrow to be safe and that the depth, which was 2.85 meters deep in the shallowest spots, was not safe enough to hold an official event.
The series of meetings went on into middle afternoon and finally it was decided by 8 pilots that they would put on a 35 lap exhibition for the 10’s of thousands of race fans whom were getting their first taste of F1 action in this Eastern European country.
