  A Short History of Preston
Preston is a busy market town situated in the north west of England, it forms a triangle with Liverpool, and Manchester, each being about 30 miles apart, Preston being the apex of the triangle to the north.
Preston was established as a port at the head of the estuary of the River Ribble.
Preston railway station is on the main line between Glasgow and London, and although rail travel is not as popular as it once was, the Preston station is still a major link with a total of thirteen platforms.

From May through to August 1648, contingents of the New Model Army under Cromwell and Fairfax were tied down at the sieges of Pembroke and Colchester.
Having secured Preston, Cromwell's troops were faced with a battle for the bridge over the Ribble and then a second bridge over the River Darwen before they could reach the main Scottish position on the hill at Walton Hall.
Having left a strong force at Preston to guard the prisoners and to garrison the town against a possible attack by Monro, Cromwell had only 3,000 foot and 2,500 horse and dragoons against 10,000 Scots.

The town was a small gathering above the River Ribble flood plain and acted as a focus for the area taking advantage of its position at the foot of the Pennines and above the fertile flood plain.
Preston was a regional centre but the region was poor.Over the next 400 years the town grew with the Burgesses building more property in the centre and it gradually expanding.
Also the civil war from 1630 to 1650 caused upheaval with a major battle being won by Cromwell in 1648 at Preston and when Royalist and Scottish armies passed through Preston on their way south.

Walton Le Dale is situated on the south banks of the River Ribble in Lancashire, directly accross the river from Preston.
Walton Le Dale's historical claim to fame is that it was the site of one of the last battles on British soil when Oliver Cromwells army fought the Duke of Hamiltons forces in 1648 on the bridge over the Ribble.

In this battle the Lancashire regiment bore the brunt of the struggle, and soon defeated the Scots with great slaughter, chasing them over Ribbleton moor and the Ribble as far as Wigan.
