The English Civil War battle of Lansdowne (or Lansdown) was fought on July 5, 1643, near Bath.
The Royalists under Lord Ralph Hopton charged the Roundheads under Sir William Waller, routing them, but at such a cost in casualties that an injured Hopton retired to Devizes in Wiltshire, and only decided the issue at Roundway Down some days later.
The site of the battle is marked by a monument to Sir Bevil Grenville, leader of the Cornish infantry on the Royalist side, who was killed in the battle.

The battle of Roundway Down was a major battle of the English Civil War in 1643.
Apart from the beautiful setting, the battle was remarkable for being a major defeat for the Parliamentarians and also also that Cromwell's cavalry were wiped out when they were driven off the escarpment at Oliver's castle.
This battle certainly extended the war as this part of the Parliamentarians' army was devastated.

Was the Lifeguard Troop, and formed a 'division' with Prince Rupert's Lifeguard of Horse at the Battle of Naseby.
He recovered from his wound, and with the remnant of the regiment (perhaps 100) was still campaigning under Lord Gerard as late as Jan. 14th, 1646.

Sadly not many relics survive of the cavalry Battle of Roundway Down on 14 July 1643, certainly the best known and most important event in the long history of Devizes.
After the battle all weapons from the fight that could be re-used would have been taken away by the victorious Royalist army, ‘scavengers’ from Devizes would have removed anything else that had been left on the battlefield while the bodies of the dead would have been stripped before burial.

Following the battle, an ammunition wagon, supposedly also transporting prisoners who were smoking, blew up and appart from destroying a large part of the remaining powder also badly wounded Sir Ralph Hopton himself, making him unable to take a full part in the actions to come.
There is little else to indicate the site of the battle, and much is now private land but Hoptons early decision not to attack Waller's redoubts can be well understood if you view the position, as he did, from Freezing Hill across the gully.
Once the Parliamentarian horse had been driven off, the 2,500 foot were left in an empty battlefield, although by the time the Royalst horse had rallied and returned to the field, the Cornish foot were issuing from the city to join the fray.
