Peace with the Dutch achieved, Blake sailed in October 1654 with 24 warships to the Mediterranean, successfully deterring the Duke of Guise from conquering Naples.

The Battle of the Texel, 11/21 August 1673 by Willem van de Velde, the younger, painted 1683.
The Dutch fleet of 75 ships and 30 fireships was commanded by Lieutenant-Admiral-General Michiel de Ruyter, with Lieutenant-Admirals Adriaen Banckert in charge of the van and Cornelis Tromp the rear.
De Ruyter first decided not to leave his defensive position in the Schooneveld, from which he had successfully engaged the allied fleet in the double Battle of Schooneveld, but was ordered to do so by stadtholder William in order to save the Spice Fleet returning from the Indies.

The battle was a major defeat for the English who lost 17 ships with some 8,000 casualties set against the 7 ships and 2,000 casualties suffered by the Dutch.
To the west, a separate battle was fought between the two rear divisions under Admirals Cornelis Tromp and Jeremy Smyth with the English Admiral rapidly gaining the upper hand.
The combined force of 92 ships sailed for Scheveningen but their attempt to land 6,000 troops was deterred by a smaller force of 60 ships under de Ruyter which had sailed from Schooneveldt.

This grisaille or 'pen-painting' depicts the last battle of the First Dutch War, 1652-54, and is based on eyewitness sketches by the artist, who was present and has interpreted it as a success for the Dutch.
Here the battle is shown towards its conclusion, and viewed from a high horizon as a continuous narrative, since several incidents which occurred at different times have been combined in the one drawing.
The figure of a younger man stands to the left and his positioning indicates that he may either be an assistant or perhaps one of the artist's sons acting as an apprentice and learning through observation.
