On May 1, the Battle of the Yalu River, in which Japanese troops stormed a Russian position after an unopposed crossing of the river, was the first major land battle of the war.
These battles, including the Battle of Nanshan on May 25, were marked by heavy Japanese losses attacking entrenched Russian positions, but the Russians remained passive and failed to counterattack.
Attempts to relieve the city from the land also failed, and after the Battle of Liaoyang in late August, the Russians retreated to Shenyang.

MODERN TENDENCIES IN STRATEGY AND TACTICS AS SHOWN IN CAMPAIGNS IN THE FAR EAST
At the battle of the Sha Ho, the main force of the Russians, advancing south through the mountains, was held in check by a portion of the Japanese Army, while the main portion of the latter attacked with the intention of surrounding the portion of the Russian Army, advancing in the plains.
Battle training is usually confined to the action of one part of a large force, but training in co-operation should be practiced by an independent detachment, and unit commanders, and especially subordinate leaders, should be trained to acquire the habit of initiative and decision.
The Japanese won the battle, but the forces engaged were very unequal in strength; and the Russians, moreover, recalled their main forces to the plains during their retreat; so that, finally, the main fronts of both sides were opposed, and the envelopment could not be effected.

 Mukden, Battle of
After the battle of Liaoyang in September 1904, the Russians fell back to a defensive line some 80 km/50 mi long on the River Sha Ho, south of Mukden.
This was the last major battle of the war – the Russian defeat finally persuaded the tsar to accept US mediation in June 1905.
The Japanese and Russian armies faced each other for some months along this line while the siege of Port Arthur was brought to an end, after which the Japanese began reinforcing their line preparatory to an attack.

The Russian Cavalry during the Russo-Japanese War
During battle the scouts were at the disposal of the commanding general who made use of them to obtain information of the different events in the struggle; during the periods of lull, the scouts made strategic exploration on the rear and the flanks of the Japanese.
Colonel Matsievskii followed the valley of the Daniho river, which is nothing but a dry bed of a small tortuous water course with very wide and gently sloping sandy banks, until he came in sight of the village of Paoutzihe, about 8 o'clock in the morning.
As for the service of reconnaissance during battle, it was not what it should have been.

 Disaster in the East
After a nine-day battle the Russians were obliged to withdraw further and finally dug in on the Sha-ho river twenty miles south of Mukden.
The battles fought at sea were very brief but utterly disastrous for the Russian fleet and decisive for the outcome of the war.
After such a battle the two armies, far from their supply bases and exhausted from their efforts, came to a halt and there was a lull for several months.

The chief river is the Yang-tze, called simply Ta-Kiang (Great River) or Kiang (River); as far as the Sze-ch'wan bend it is called Kin-sha-kiang; its general course is from west to east and its length about 4000 miles.

 Osprey etc. Histories
This army fought a tenacious defense of South Korea, counterattacked north to the Yalu River with the separate X Corps, before falling back in the face of massive Chinese intervention, conducted a war of movement, and settled into a bloody two-year long period of static warfare.
The large-scale battles and sieges of the European front can be starkly contrasted to the ambush and skirmish tactics of forest warfare in North America.
The resulting battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg, fought over a period of about seven weeks, established a pattern of nearly continuous fighting and immense loss.

Our ultimate goal is [still] the liberation of all historical Palestine from the [Jordan] River to the [Mediterranean] Sea, even if this means that the conflict will last for another thousand years or for many generations.
The foremost aim of an insurgent force, whether it is violent or non-violent, is to avoid annihilation, for which purpose it must avoid visible organization, concentration, and battle.
Beyond these specific tactics, there are several basic principles which an insurgent group must observe: 1) staying in existence; 2) modifying the pace of hostilities; and 3) securing and maintaining safe sanctuaries and mobility.
