The 1862 Battle of Shepherdstown may have significantly changed the course of the American Civil War as the last battle of the Maryland Campaign; the campaign that is generally acknowledged as the turning point of the Civil War.
The Campaign was undertaken in early September of 1862 in hopes of both: winning over the citizens of Maryland to the Confederate cause; and, winning a military engagement in the north in order to convince the governments of England and France to recognize the legitimacy of the Confederacy.
The resulting irony of the Battle of Shepherdstown is that General Robert E. Lee changed his plans because he believed that his retreat across the Potomac was being pursued aggressively.
