The Battle of Solebay, which took place on 28th May 1672, marked the opening of the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-4),.
The battle finally ended at sunset, where the possible return of the French division and the failing light caused the Dutch to withdraw.
The badge of HMS SOLEBAY incorporates the White Rose of York to commemorate the Duke of York's role in the battle.

She was named after the Battle of Solebay which took place in 1672 between an Anglo-French force and the Dutch Navy during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
Solebay was intended to join the 19th Destroyer Flotilla of the British Pacific Fleet, but the war against Japan ended while Solebay was working up in the Mediterranean, and so she returned to Home Waters.
Solebay was positioned in the middle of her sister-ships Cadiz and Corunna.

In the centre of the picture is the 'Royal Prince' of Admiral Sir Edward Spragge and the battle is shown focused on her defence against Tromp's repeated attacks with gunfire and fireships.
Captured in battle by John at Mirebeau-en-Poitou on 01 August 1202, Arthur (several years older than he looks in the picture) was imprisoned and, according to tradition, was murdered either by John himself or at his order.
