At the Battle of Vitoria, June 21, the 65,000 men of Joseph were routed by 53,000 British, 27,000 Portuguese and 19,000 Spaniards.
Soult was given command of the French forces and began a counter-offensive, dealing the Allied generals two sharp defeats at the Battle of Maya and the Battle of Roncesvalles.

 The Peninsular War 1808-1814
The Battle of Vimeiro was the first occasion on which Napoleonic offensive tactics combining skirmishers, columns and supporting artillery fire failed against the British infantry line and Wellesley's defensive skills.
The last battle of the Peninsular War was fought on 10th April as Wellington cleared the French from the Calvinet Ridge overlooking the city of Toulouse.

Later on, Mass�na took "the worst route in Portugal" and the Battle of Busaco on September 27, suffered a big check but the Allies were soon forced to retreat to the Lines.

The battle was long, confusing and hard fought, at one stage the Allied cavalry had to withdraw behind the infantry lines.
Throughout the battles the 2/42nd had suffered 9 casualties no the 3rd, and 25 casualties on the 5th, the casualties were low on the 5th due to the steadfastness of the men when being attacked by the cavalry.
The shoes were the hardest to replace and with all the marching they soon wore out, some having to march in bare foot over flint roads, during the battle the soldiers had to revert to robbing the dead of their clothes and especially their shoes of both sides.

With Marshal Soult counterattacking through the Pyrenees, Sir Arthur Wellesley collected a sizeable force, some 24,000 men, and moved to stop him at Sorauren.
While on a reconnaissance, Wellesley was almost captured by the French, but managed to elude them and return to his main force.
Two smaller battles occurred two days later as the French tried to get between Wellesley's army and the troops surrounding San Sebastian.

By mid-year, Wellington apponted Pakenham to be his Adjudant-General, but returned to command the 6th when its temporary commander was wounded at the Battle of Sorauren.
Pakenham was killed during the course of the battle, and tradition has it that his heart was removed from his body and buried on the battlefield before his body was brought back to England.
His defeat at New Orleans is really just a footnote in the history of a battle that is in itself merely a footnote in history.

San Sebastián (Donostia) is a great place to visit and makes an excellent base for touring the Battles of the Pyrenees.
