This painting depicts the moment during the Revolutionary War Battle of Springfield, June 23, 1780, when Reverend James Caldwell, Pastor and Chaplain of of the American Regiment of Colonel Elias Dayton, passed out the Isaac Watts Hymnals from the Presbyterian Church for use as Musket wadding.
The British goal of reaching Morristown was thwarted and the Battle of Springfield marked the last invasion of the British into New Jersey and removed the danger to Washington's Continental forces.

Battle of Springfield - BRAVO members conducted a metal detecting survey for Richard Grubb Associates, Inc. of an area of land suspected to be associated with the June 23, 1780 Battle of Springfield.
BRAVO volunteers gain lots of archaeological experience throughout New Jersey, but our main focus is battlefield archaeology.
BRAVO then donated the 19th century framed painting by Dexter to the State Park Service, and it can now be seen hanging in the Monmouth Battlefield Visitors' Center.

When the Old Piqua village was destroyed by General Wayne in 1780, and the Shawnee moved to the banks of the Great Miami River in Miami County, the 12 year old Tecumseh was probably with them.
The village of his birth is in dispute, although many believe the location, (after recognizing five possibilities and their claims) of birth probably occurred at Old Piqua on the Mad River, just southwest of Springfield, Ohio.
In 1813, the great Tecumseh died in the Battle of the Thames River in Canada.

The beacons were burned as a call-to-arms for the local militia prior to the battles of Connecticut Farms and Springfield, the last two significant revolutionary battles fought on New Jersey soil.
