Battle of Calabria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The battle occurred 30 miles to the east of Punta Stilo, the "toe" of Italy (Calabria), on 9 July 1940.
The Battle of Calabria, also known as the Battle of Punta Stilo, was a naval battle between ships of Italian Regia Marina on one side and the British Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy on the other.
Their strategy was to have only one ship targeted at a time, as it was learned during the battle of Jutland that with more than one firing at a single target it became very difficult for the rangefinding parties to tell which rounds were theirs.

 Action off Calabria
The battle of Punta Stilo, as it should more properly be called, was the largest concentration of firepower in the Mediterranean war and is one of the most debated episodes of the struggle between the British and Italian fleets.
Defining Punta Stilo an encounter, rather than a battle, just because there were no major losses does not give credit to the commitment of the two fleets and especially their level of readiness and military skills.
Following the battle, both sides immediately claimed victory, and from the waters of the Ionian sea the skirmish continued on grossly falsified war bulletins and radio announcements.

Between 1933 and 1937 her length was increased by 10.3 meters, and she was given new armored decks and new propulsion machinery that uprated her to 93,000 horsepower (yielding 28 knots).

 Second World War Books: Review
Naval battles such as Punta Stilo, Cape Spada, Taranto, Cape Spartivento, and Matapan receive thorough treatment in which the opposing forces are carefully measured (with much consideration given, for example, conflicting estimates of top speeds for each warship) and the blow by blow (or splash by splash) progress of operations charted.
As the writers intend, some battles (as well as some other aspects of the campaign) receive short shrift ("we do place all these in the context of the overall struggle") while some battles undergo microscopic examination.
Similarly, while their connecting narrative of the overall course of the war in the Med is passable, specific naval and air-naval battles constitute the real meat of the book.

To this point, during the battle of Punta Stilo, the Royal Sovereign had not been able to reach the battle zone in time.
The battle of Punta Stilo (Action off Calabria) had left much dissatisfaction within the high command of the Royal Navy.
The audacity of Punta Stilo, in which the Regia Marina fought in numerical inferiority, had transformed itself in fear, even in conditions of clear superiority.

 Taranto
Following the Battle of Punta Stilo (Encounter off Calabria), the Regia Marina had decisively implemented the policy of "Fleet in Being".
It is now known that the damages to the Eagle dated back to the battle of Punta Stilo when several near misses caused serious structural damage to the ship, including the fuel system.
Despite the heavy losses, the Italian Navy was still of considerable force as it was demonstrated a few days later, during the Battle of Spartivento (Capo Teulada).

 Caulonia 2000 - Caulonian itineraries - Presentation - M. T. Iannelli
The hostilities between Locri and Crotone culminated in a battle fought on the river Sagra (the whereabouts of which are still unknown) half way through the VI century B.C. The outcome favoured the Locresi, who, from then on, established their supremacy over that of Crotone.
For this reason it will be necessary to consider the territory of the nowadays Caulonia in the light of the happenings in the vaster territory of today’s Locride (between Cape Bruzzano and Punta Stilo) for which we are notably more informed.
At this point in the researches, man has not been proved to have lived in this territory in the paleolithic era; however it is certain that the dwellers of this part of the Ionian coast did not have fixed homes, they lived in natural caves and were hunters.

 Magnagrecia
The battle claimed the lives of twenty thousand Macedonians.
The spoils of war amounted to the then unheard of figure of 210 million sestertia: ancient Rome celebrated the vietory with a hitherto unknown splendour and opulenee, with parades of prisoners and slaves, carts of valuable plunder - the city was poised to become the absolute master of the Mediterranean and the East.
Perhaps while one of the two statues was about to be thrown over the side, one of the crew realised that its Corinthian helmet was gold-plated: the helmet was wrenched from the statue's head as a last chance to make money from a ill-fated undertaking.

Italian Royal Navy in World War Two: personal considerations
Instead, just after the short battle of Punta Stilo, Supermarina adopted a very prudent way of action, so prudent that it had to call for Supreme Command to have precise directives, because between the crews there was a dissatisfaction which was due to the relative inactivity.
A weaker fleet (and faster) tries, normally, to avoid contact, at least until there is a favorable opportunity: it is for this reason that, in History, there were fewer naval battles than land ones.
Navy, instead, would have had to assume a defensive-offensive role (ready therefore to take advantage of every possibility against inferior forces), in the moments of inferiority, and offensive in the moments of supremacy.
