The Battle of Suomussalmi lasted from around December 8 1939 to January 7, 1940.
On November 30, the Soviet 163rd division crossed the border between Finland and the Soviet Union and advanced from north-east towards the village of Suomussalmi which was only defended by one Finnish battalion (Er.P 15).
It was entrenched on the road between Suomussalmi and Raate.

The Suomussalmi village and the rear area of the battalions fighting on the Raate-road was severely threatened.
V.Vehanen, was transported to Suomussalmi on 3 Dec, and while the original plan was that the whole battalion was to be used in the attack on the Raate road, the situation in the Palovaara area, resulted in the change of plans and the 2nd company was left behind as the reserve of the P-SR.
The role of tanks in the battle was almost nonexistent, as the ice on the lakes didn't yet support the weight of the light Soviet tanks.

The plans of using the division in the Suomussalmi area were completed on 21 Dec, in cooperation with the General HQ and the HQ of P-SR.
In Suomussalmi village, the JR 27 was periodically bombarded by artillery.
Therefore its safe to say that the Finnish victory in Suomussalmi (and the subsequent victory of the 44th RD along the Raate road) were definitely among the most crucial battles of the Winter War.

As a colonel Siilasvuo lead the Finnish defence at Kuhmo[?] and in the Battle of Suomussalmi.

The two divisions attacked successively, first the 163rd along a northeast to southwest axis on the northern flank, and then the 44th along a southeast to northwest axis on the southern flank.
The initial task was to seize the road junction of Suomussalmi and to destroy any Finn forces in that area to allow the 9th Army to control the Suomussalmi-Oulu axis of advance.
The Soviets, however, learned a number of valuable lessons from this battle and the others like it during this war, and applied these lessons in total or in part by the time of the German invasion of the USSR in the spring of 1941.
