On June 6 Kościuszko was defeated in the Battle of Szczekociny by a joint Russo-Prussian forces and on June 8 General Józef Zajączek was defeated in the Battle of Chełm.
After the battles of Krupczyce (September 17) and Terespol (September 19), the new army started its march towards the Polish capital.
Kościuszko himself was wounded in the battle and was captured by the Russians who sent him to Petersburg.

Szczekociny is a town located on the banks of the Pilica River.
The history of Szczekociny is related to Tadeusz Koociuszko who in its neighborhood on June 6, 1794 fought a one-sided battle against a combined Russian and Prussian army.
During the German occupation, Szczekociny was burnt and 50% of its population and the whole Jewish population was annihilated.

The Russians were defeated in more than one pitched battle; three-quarters of the ancient territory was recovered, and Warsaw and Vilna, the capitals of Poland and Lithuania respectively, were liberated.
The death-blow to the movement was the disaster of Maciejowice (Oct. 10), and it expired amidst the carnage of Praga (Oct. 29), though the last Polish army corps did not capitulate till the 18th of November.
The immediate result of the third partition was an immense emigration of the more high-spirited Poles who, during the next ten years, fought the battles of the French Republic and of Napoleon all over Europe, but principally against their own enemies, the partitioning powers.

The Battle of Chojnice (Battle of Conitz) occurred on September 18, 1454 between Poland and the Teutonic Knights during the Thirteen Years' War, it was won by the latter.
The Polish army had 16000 cavalry, a few thousand servants (who can and usually were used in battles), a few hundred infantry plus 500 mercenaries and burgers from Danzig and 2000 mercenaries hired by Prussian Confederacy, all under the command of King Casimir IV, advised by chancellor Jan Koniecpolski and Piotr from Szczekociny.

He was in the battle of Zielence, 18 June, 1792, and in that of Dubienka, 17 July, 1792, where, with only 4,000 men, he kept 15,000 Russians at bay for six hours, making his retreat without great loss.
But the patriots were overwhelmed by numbers, and when King Stanislas submitted to the second partition of Poland, Kosciuszko resigned his commission and retired to Leipsic, where he received from the national assembly the citizenship of France.
He committed the conduct of government affairs to a national council that was organized by himself, and after receiving re-enforcements moved forward in quest of the Russian army.

In the war following upon the proclamation of the constitution of the 3rd of May 1791 and the formation of the reactionary Confederation of Targowica, Kosciuszko took a leading part.
As the commander of a division under Prince Joseph Poniatowski he distinguished himself at the battle of Zielence in 1792, and at Dubienka (July 18) with 4000 men and 10 guns defended the line of the Bug for five days against the Russians with 18,000 men and 60 guns, subsequently retiring upon Warsaw unmolested.
The fact that Kosciuszko's visit synchronized with the execution of Louis XVI subsequently gave the enemies of Poland a plausible pretext for accusing her of Jacobinism, and thus prejudicing Europe against her.
