As a matter of fact, Battle of Shanghai happened twice, one in 1932 and the second in 1937.
There were also some other famous battles where japanese troop was beaten, such as Battle of Taierzhuang and Battle of Pingxing Pass.
Looking at the a few of the battles in the North though, (outside of cities in swampland, etc.) we can get a lot of use out of the houses and pagodas at first, and then clean it up later with more realistic objects.
