The Hill of Allen is to the north of Allen village and was the supposed encampment of the legendary Fionn MacCuille and his Fianna.
Tara Hill was one of the most venerated religious spots in early Ireland and the seat of the High Kings of Ireland from 3rd century until 1022.
On the Hill of Tara there are the remains of many other earthworks: to the South of the Mound of the Hostages, inside the bank and the ditch of the so-called Royal Enclosure, stand two linked ringforts known as the Royal Seat and the Forradh.

The initial mobilisations had gone well for the rebels, with a force of 4,000 rebels gathered at the camp by early morning.
An attack up the hill was quickly launched and met strong resistance from the rebels but the superior firepower of the military combined with a well-executed bayonet charge drove the rebels from the hill, dispersing them with much slaughter.
The battle was notable for participation of a number of women in the rebel forces with at least one, Molly Weston (who died fighting on horseback), in a leadership position.
