In this battle, Oda Nobunaga defeated Imagawa Yoshimoto and established himself as one of the front-running warlords in the Sengoku period.
This was all reported to Oda Nobunaga by his scouts, who then led his own force into position at a temple called Zenshōji.
Had Nobunaga decided on a frontal assault, the battle would have been deceptively easy to predict; his army was outnumbured ten to one by the Imagawa forces.

Oda Nobunaga was born Oda Kipposhi, the second son of 織田信秀 Oda Nobuhide, the minor daimyo of the small 尾張 Owari province, He was a very stalwart and brave man, whose many battles were against the 松平 Matsudaira (later to be named as the Tokugawa) and Imagawa families of neighboring provinces.
After some small struggles and battles with the Azai-Asakura, Nobunaga and Ieyasu met the two at the river field of Anegawa in July of 1570.
This was one of the most significant battles in Nobunaga's life, and the worst for the Takeda.

Shibata served Nobunaga at the Battle of Okehazama (1560) against the Imagawa, and in the Oda's war with the Saito of Mino (1561-1563).
Theoretically part of Shibata's fief since 1573, Kaga was in fact under the sway of the Ikko-ikki, and required strenuous effort to be brought to bear, particularly since after 1577 the Uesugi of Echigo were openly hostile to the Oda.
Shibata was present for the Battle of Tedorigawa that year, in which Uesugi Kenshin defeated Oda Nobunaga and pushed Uesugi influence well into Kaga.

These consisted of the battle of Shizugatake (near the edges of Omi and Echizen provinces), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (backing up Oda Hidenobu) versus Shibata Katsuie (who backed up Oda Nobutaka), 1582-1583; and the battle of Nagakute and Yamazaki, in Owari province, Toyotomi Hideyoshi versus Tokugawa Ieyasu (who backed up Oda Nobuo), 1583.
