Erwin Rommel was forced to abandon his siege of Tobruk on 4th December, and the following month had moved as far west as Archibald Wavell had achieved a year previously.
British forces under General Leslie Morshead repulsed German attacks on the fortress and on 4th December, 1941, Rommel decided to abandon the siege of Tobruk.
The British Army recaptured Tobruk on 13th November, 1942, bringing the battle at El Alamein to an end.

On April 11th, Tobruk- an important port- was enveloped by Rommel and garrisons were set up East of Tobruk to warn of a British relief force.
The British plan of battle was to let Rommel think he was flanking them in the South while a killing pocket was set up with anti tank guns, artillery, and tanks for his unwitting troops.
Meanwhile, the battle for Sicily ground on, and the Soviets launched a major counter-attack with rumors of an overwhelming breakthrough which turned out to be exaggerated.

In June of the same year, there was a long, drawn-out battle around Tobruk as German forces, commanded by ’Desert Fox’ Field Marshal Rommel, tried to surround and capture the port.
A well-planned British defence held up the German advance and soon much of their armour was short of ammunition and fuel ; as a result an Allied attack was mounted against enemy forces in an area known as The Cauldron, south of Tobruk.
At one time every sub-unit and battalion headquarters were over-run by German tanks but the men were able to filter back between the enemy groups and so the fighting retreat continued.
