Esen Tayisi was a 15th century prince of the Oirat (also known as the Kalmyks), best-known for capturing the Zhengtong Emperor after the Battle of Tumu Fortress.
The large-scale, three-pronged invasion began in July 1449, with Khan Toghto Bukha leading the easternmost force, and Esen himself heading the troops that sacked the city of Datong (or Ta-t'ung) in August.
While Sino-Mongol trade did not cease entirely during the Tumu Crisis, as the incident has come to be called, Esen had not only failed to win better terms than the prior arrangements, he was forced to accept less amenable terms in return for resumption of more normal relations with the Ming Empire.

The Tumu Crisis (Chinese: 土木之變; pinyin: Tŭmù zhī bìan); also called Crisis of Tumubao (土木堡之變); or Battle of Tumu (土木之役), was a frontier conflict between Mongolia and the Chinese Ming Dynasty which led to the capture of the Zhengtong Emperor on September 8, 1449.

Ming Yingzong's expedition against the Oirats was meant to relieve Datong, but the vanguard suffered a crushing defeat and the retreating army of 500,000 was annihilated by the Oirats, with Yingzong taken prisoner.
The Oirat troops attacked Tu Mu Bao and Ming was forced to fight and encountered much losses in casualities.
As Yun mentioned in post #2, the Oirats had already breached the pass at the Great Wall before the battle of Tumu they captured the emperor.

After Battle of tumu 1449, Ming move towards defensive position just like the Song dynasty.
After the defeat in tumu, the Ming doesn't have the strenght to defeat the mongol and the chance of occupying it has been missed.
