Both battles are recounted in HEIKE MONOGATARI 平家物語 (The Tale of The Heike), and GENPEI SEISUIKI 源平盛衰記 (The Rise and Fall of The Genji and The Heike), 1) Also known as the "Battle at the Uji Bridge" Ujibashi no tatakai 宇治橋の戦い.
In the fourth month of 1180 the prince Mochihito 以仁 (1151-80) and his men fled from the capital to Miidera 三井寺 and then to *Uji where they hid in the Byoudouin 平等院.
The "Battle of the Bridge" was illustrated both as one part of the screens of Genpei battles, and as the sole subject of works such as the anonymous Ujibashi kassen byoubu 宇治橋合戦屏風, and *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 prints.

The most important of the uji were the Omi, who claimed divine descent, and the Muraji, who were said to be descended from nobles of the pre-Yamato era.
In 1156 a civil war was waged between the forces of two rival emperors, and, after a second war in 1159–60, the Taira crushed the Minamoto and seized control of Japan from the Fujiwara.
The tide of battle began to change in 1942, when an Allied naval and air force contained a Japanese invasion fleet in the Battle of the Coral Sea between New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

 The Age of the Samurai - Gempei Wars 1180-1185
It was a series of battles fought for the control of the imperial court and the ultimate victors were the Minamoto who annihilated the Taira and established their clan head, Yoritomo, as shogun and consigning the emperor to nothing more than a symbolic role until the mid-19th century.
After losing the battle of Ishibashiyama he withdrew to Kamakura where he established a military base and sent his capable generals out to fight the war, which was wise considering his poor grasp of military matters.
The ensuing naval battle was one of the most decisive in Japanese history and began with a long range archery duel.

Rewards, both monetary and honorary, were given in the Gempei battles to soldiers who excelled, either by killing a high-ranking opponent or by being the first to charge into enemy lines.
The famous crossing of the Uji River, in which two brave Minamoto warriors on horseback charge into the high waters, competing to be the first to reach the Taira on the opposite banks, has been depicted by several of the warrior print artists.

In 1180, in one of the more famous battles in which sōhei participated, the monks of Miidera, along with a force of Minamoto samurai, tried to defend the bridge over the river Uji, and the Byōdōin temple behind it, from an attacking Taira force (see Battle of Uji (1180)).
The naginata is the weapon most often associated with them, though in legend as well as history many warrior monks are known to have been proficient with everything from bow and arrow to tantō and wakizashi (dagger and shortsword).
