They recruited soldiers from Germany, who took position in Vysehrad, Hradcany, and the archbishop palace and cloister of Saint Thomas in a part of Prague called New Town.
The Hussite uprising was successful in other parts of Bohemia, and the towns of Klatovy, Pisek, Louny, Zatec, and Plzen were under Hussite control.
On 13 November 1419, Queen Sophia promised to protect the Hussites in all of Bohemia.

After his departure civil war broke out, the Taborites opposing in arms the more moderate Utraquists, who at this period are also called by the chroniclers the "Praguers", as Prague was their principal stronghold.
On 30 May of that year the Taborite army, led by Prokop the Great and Prokop the Lesser, who both fell in the battle, was totally defeated and almost annihilated at Lipany.
