The troops of Wellington occupied the northern part of the plains of Mont-Saint-Jean and were situated behind a sunken lane, which later proved to be a strategic advantage for the Duke, because the French infantry and cavalry kept fallen inside this sunken land and thereby hindering each other to move further north.
After the battle, the territory of the battlefield was given to the Wellington family by the newly formed state of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Battle of Wavre was a battle of the War of the Seventh Coalition, the last of the Napoleonic Wars.
It was fought on June 18 and June 19 1815 between the Prussian rearguard under the command of General Johann von Thielmann and 3 corps of the French army under the command of Marshal Grouchy.
The battle took place on June 18, the same day as the Battle of Waterloo and after a pause overnight resumed the next morning ending in a French victory.

The village of Wavre was situated on the north-west bank of the river Dyle with only a small suburb on the east bank.
To the south-west of Wavre was the Bierge mill with a wooden bridge and about 2 miles (3,2 km) further was the hamlet of Limale with another wooden bridge and the hamlet of Limelette.
