As the forces of Union Maj. General Jacob Cox advanced on Kinston following the retreat of the forces of Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg at the Battle of Wyse Fork, the crew of the Neuse made the radical move of destroying the ship.
Delays had plagued the ship’s construction, the river level was low, and since the Neuse was one of just 22 ironclad ships commissioned by the Southerners, she was far too valuable to allow to fall into Union hands.
After the second largest land battle fought in North Carolina at nearby Wyse Fork, and the retreat of the Confederates, the Neuse’s crew sank the ship.
