The Battle of Sekigahara (Sekigahara no Tatakai?), popularly known as the Realm Divide, was a decisive battle on September 15, 1600 (on the ancient Chinese calendar, October 21 on the modern calendar) that cleared the path to the Shogunate for Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Even though the battle demonstrated Tokugawa's authority, many clans, especially those on the western side, became bitter about their displacement or what they saw as a dishonorable defeat or punishment.
They conducted their battles according to tradition and ritual which included declaring your name, your exploits and the bold exploits of your ancestors, after which a suitable enemy would do the same and accept the challenge and an archery duel would often commence between the two protagonists.

Continuing to flee from his cousins' armies after attacking Kyoto, burning the Hōjūjiden, and kidnapping Emperor Go-Shirakawa, Minamoto no Yoshinaka made his final stand at Awazu.
He had met up with his companion and foster brother Imai Kanehira at Seta, along the way, and was also joined in battle by his wife, Tomoe Gozen.
However, in the end, all three met their ends; Yoshinaka was struck dead by an arrow when his horse became mired in a paddy field, and Imai committed suicide, leaping off his horse while holding his sword in his mouth.
