		Prior to the battle with the Japanese, the vessels and armaments of the Chinese fleet were examined, and the ships were repainted.

		The battleships were side-by-side in the center with the remaining ships alongside (spreading into a sort of arrowhead shape)--unfortunately the weakest ships were placed on the flanks of the formation and were pounded by the Japanese line as it circled around the Chinese fleet.
		The most well-known story behind this battle is the corruption of the Chinese (Manchu/Ch'ing Dynasty) government.

		The Variag was a large American-built protected cruiser, while the Asama was one of multiple Japanese armored cruisers based on the Elswick O'Higgins type, most of them British-built.
		The Chiyoda was a small, weak armored cruiser and the Naniwa class were protected cruisers with heavy guns (these three ships were veterans of the Sino-Japanese war ten years before and fought at the battle of Yalu).
