Yashima is in the east of Takamatsu, which is one of the best-known ancient battlefields between the Heike and the Genji clans.
Yashima, so called because of its shape like the roof of a traditional Japanese farm house, is a mesa headland jutting out into the Seto Inland Sea.
The battle was fought not on the sea but on the coast, creating thousands of episodes including the death of Sato Tsugunobu sacrificing himself for Yoshitsune, Nasuno Yoichi's skillful shot at the fan, Yoshitsune's drop of his bow in the water and many others.

 Battles of Ichinotani and Yashima
Screens depicting battle scenes were popular during the seventeenth century because they stood as testaments to the warrior ideals of martial bravery and fierce loyalty.
On the right screen is the battle in spring of 1184 at Ichinotani (near present-day Kobe on the mainland), which resulted from a surprise attack by the Minamoto.
On the left screen is the subsequent engagement at Yashima (on the coast of the island of Shikoku), where the Taira had taken refuge after their defeat at Ichinotani.

Operation Yashima takes its name from the Yashima Battle, year one of the Bunji era (1185), during the Genpei wars.
According to the legend, during the battle, the samurai Yoichi Nasuno (aka Nasu no Yoichi), while riding his horse in the water, hit the red fan of his enemy Tamamushi with an arrow from long distance, thus resolving the battle.
Analogy with the Yashima operation is evidently the need for an accurate long distance shot (from behind 'the water' of lake Ashino) to resolve the battle.

Yoshitsune defeated and killed his rival cousin Minamoto no Yoshinaka at the battle of Awazu in Omi Province in the first month of 1184 and in the next month defeated the Taira at the Battle of Ichi-no-Tani in present day Kobe.
In 1185, Yoshitsune defeated the Taira again at the Battle of Yashima in Shikoku and destroyed them at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in present day Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Once again, Paterson is true to history in her description of the white cloud and dolphin omens, the critical turning of the High Priest of Kumano Shrine to support the Genji, and the tragic end to which many of the Heike clan succumb.
