The Battle of Yellow Tavern was fought on May 11, 1864, as part of the Overland Campaign of the American Civil War.
The two had fought an inconclusive battle at the Wilderness and were engaged in heavy fighting at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.
The two forces met at noon on May 11, 1864, at Yellow Tavern, an abandoned inn located six miles north of Richmond.

Although the 1st North Carolina Cavalry was not officially engaged during the Second Battle of Manassas, apparently, Private Brown and a detachment of the 1st did see action.
His wound must have been slight because he was again in action on November 5, 1862, at the Battle of Barbee's Cross Roads when the regiment lost four killed and seventeen wounded and captured in a furious cavalry charge against the Federals.
The 1st North Carolina remained with Stuart's command until the General was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, then it was transferred to Gen. W.H.F. Lee's Division, where it remained until April 1865.

Rhea is very good at describing the physical appearance of the battlefield, and it is fairly obvious that he has spent much time walking the fields and researching descriptions of their appearance in 1864.
His research on both battles was exhuastive, combing through a wide range of published and unpublished sources.
Even more interesting, is Rhea’s account of Yellow Tavern, in which he contends that, though J.E.B. Stuart’s death was a gerat personal loss for Lee, the Confederate cavalry profited in the long run by the appointment of Wade Hampton as Stuart’s successor.
