The battle then continued and, one by one, all the vehicles were taken away.
Thereafter, that being almost the end of the battle, most of the people were taken to the roundabout and put into buses and, by all accounts, taken to prisons and police stations the breadth of southern England.
Many of the vehicles were open, and the police were able to just walk in and inspect the contents, but some of the vehicles had been left shut, or locked, and some of the police methods of gaining entry to those vehicles were unorthodox, to put it mildly.

In the years prior to the Beanfield many travellers took part in protests against the introduction of cruise missile bases onto common land.
The Beanfield was the first in a series of large-scale police operations, caried out over the Solstice period, designed to make the travelling lifestyle untennable.

Battle of the Beanfield - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of the Beanfield was an incident in 1985 when Wiltshire Police prevented a convoy of several hundred new age travellers from setting up the fourteenth Stonehenge free festival in Wiltshire, England.
This gave the convoy a couple of minutes' notice that an attack was imminent, and many tried to escape in their vehicles, crossing over into the adjacent beanfield, but travelling over rough field terrain their vehicles were so slow that they were all quickly overtaken by policemen on foot.

If the coercive policing used during the miners strike was a violent introduction to Thatcher's mal-intention towards union activity, the Battle of the Beanfield was a similarly severe introduction to a new era of intolerance of Travellers.

This confrontation was quickly named 'The Battle of the Beanfield', an evocative title which puts us quite naturally on the path leading back to the 16th Century villagers whose night-time battles against evil have been brought to our notice by Carlo Ginzburg.
The 'battle' itself took place on Saturday ; by the time the Monday morning papers were published, the event was no longer of first importance, for the riot at Heysel, which put the whole world of football in disarray, had become the main event of the moment.
Motorists who saw the battle claimed that police were showered with petrol bombs, stones and missiles fired by catapults.

But the Battle of the Beanfield - as it quickly became known - happened outside the jurisdiction of the injunction, and was indicative of a harder line being adopted at the highest level of government against the growing number of hippies spending their summers on the free festival circuit.
But rather than putting an end to the politicisation of the Peace Convoy, the Battle of the Beanfield pushed a significant number of free festival veterans further towards the activism of the emerging anti-globalisation and road protest movements.

BATTLE Of The BEANFIELD - 20 YEARS ON June 1st was the 20th anniversary of the Battle of the Beanfield, a notoriously brutal one-sided confrontation between 450 unarmed travellers – including many women and children – and a quasi-military police force of over 1,300 police and MoD.
By the end of the day, 537 people had been arrested – 420 at the Beanfield, and most of the rest at Stonehenge itself, where a separate gathering was also broken up.
At the Beanfield, the remaining vehicles were systematically looted and smashed.

A few hours later the convoy had been ambushed by more than 1,300 police officers; dozens of Travellers were injured, all but a handful were arrested, and every one of their vehicles was destroyed.
When some of those remaining tried to get away, driving their vehicles through the beanfield, the police threw anything they could lay their hands on - fire extinguishers, stones, shields and truncheons - at them in order to bring them to a halt.

Out now: 'The Battle of the Beanfield', edited by Andy Worthington, with photos and contributions by Alan Lodge, Tim Malyon, Neil Goodwin, Gareth Morris, Alan Dearling and others.
'The Battle of the Beanfield' took place on June 1st 1985, after a convoy of new travellers, peace protestors, green activists and festival-goers had set off from Savernake Forest in Wiltshire to establish the 12th annual free festival at Stonehenge.
As well as suppressing the festival and introducing a summer solstice 'exclusion zone' around Stonehenge that lasted until the year 2000, 'The Battle of the Beanfield' also marked the start of a concerted effort to 'decommission' the whole of the new travellers' movement.
