Battle of the Downs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The naval Battle of the Downs took place on 31 October 1639 during the Eighty Years' War and was a decisive defeat of the Spanish, commanded by Admiral Antonio de Oquendo, by the United Provinces, commanded by Admiral Maarten Tromp.
However, for England the Battle of the Downs was a humililation: a flagrant violation of English neutrality within sight of the English coast, with England's navy powerless to intervene.
Lingering resentment from this incident may have influenced the breakout of the First Anglo-Dutch War not far from the Downs at the Battle of Goodwin Sands in 1652.

On 25 April 1607 during the Eighty Years' War, a Dutch fleet surprised and engaged a Spanish fleet anchored at the Bay of Gibraltar.
Van Heemskerk was killed during the first approach on the Spanish flagship as a cannon ball severed his leg.
The Dutch effectively then doubled up the galleons – in a move similar to the Battle of the Nile fought 200 years later – and a few of the galleons caught fire.

Episode V could have been less dragged out and more interesting, plus it has a horrible ending, but it makes up for it with the Battle of Hoth and the chemistry, so ultimately ranks towards the middle after at least Episode III and Episode IV.
