The battles of, Dagorlad, Orodruin, Fornost, Azanulbizar and Morannon
It appears that this battle (and later, during the seven-years siege of Barad-dûr, and the battle of Orodruin at the end of it, when Sauron comes out and fights with the kings) is a natural for concentrating on the heroic powers of individual champions and their magic weapons.
The first battle obviously hinges on the fact that the Witch-king underestimates the strength of his foes; not having heard adequate news of the arrival of the army of Gondor.
Fought near or on the same ground as the battle of Dagorlad, this is the final battle of the Third Age and the War of the Ring.

The Black Gate of Mordor was originally a gate built by Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor, to prevent invasion at the gap between the Ered Lithui and the Ephel Duath.
Although Sauron lost the Battle of Pelennor Fields, the free forces of the west were greatly weakened, and Sauron still had sufficient armies in reserve to ensure military victory.
In the northwest corner of Mordor the deep valley of Udûn was the only entrance for large armies, and that is where Sauron built the Black Gate of Mordor, although it is possible this gate was built by either elves or Numenoreans with the intention of keeping evil within Mordor.

The stars were veiled and the skies threatened rain, so all who had been most badly wounded in battle at the Morannon had been gathered close together, on pallets or cots, and a great tent erected over them.
All along the road during the quest, right up until their parting in Rohan, they had slept side by side on the same patch of hard ground, or in whatever sort of rough bed was provided.
With this the battle was lost, and they burst into nearly silent guffaws, the laughter coming out in little barks and breathy squeaks as they tried desperately to be quiet.

When they turn up at the Battle of Five Armies and at the Battle of the Morannon, the Eagles seem more like the good old Cavalry than anything else.
The thing I find interesting about the Eagles is that they seem to be DEM's because of their peripheral but key status in the story, but you get the idea that they and Gandalf share a very complex relationship; in fact, if not for Gwaihir, Gandalf would never have made it to Rivendell.
Perhaps he is DEM because we do not get a thorough history of the Eagles and their relationship to the humanoids of ME, except through hints of Gandalf's.

Pip brought up the best argument, I believe, which is that if we don't know what happens to Eowyn, the audience may continue to believe she still loves Aragorn, even though he marries Arwen.
So now I hope that PJ has perhaps made some reference, hint, or sign that Eowyn falls in love with Faramir at the Houses of Healing, likely showing it before the battle at the Morannon, and that he'll at least show it in the EE DVD.
Yet, like Imlar told me a few days ago, PJ might be able to pull off the REF with just a few shots or one short scene that wouldn’t take up too much time and which could be hopefully inserted in the ROTK EE.
