or the Battle against the Nervians (or Nervii), was fought in 57 BC in the area known today as Flanders, between the legions of the Roman Republic and an association of Belgic tribes in Gaul, principally the Nervii (a Belgian-French tribe).
The Nervii, under the command of Boduognatus and supported by the Viromandui and the Atrebates, had collected their forces on the south bank of the river, hidden in some trees about two hundred feet from the bank, and prepared to attack the legions setting up camp on the other bank of the river.
The Aduatuci were not present, but were marching to join them (though they did not arrive in time to take part in the battle).

Livius Picture Archive: The battle of the Sabis (57 BCE)
The battle was more or less in balance; on the Roman left and in the center, the legionaries were successful, but on their right wing, the Nervians had pushed back the Seventh and Twelfth.
They were now caught between on the one hand the victorious Tenth and on the other hand the Seventh and Twelfth legions, which were reinforced by the Thirteenth and Fourteenth, the Roman rear.
This is exaggerated, but the battle was a disaster for the Nervians, and Caesar could proceed to the valley of the Meuse, where he was to attack the Atuatuci.

The core of the Military campaigns of ancient Rome is the account of the Roman military's land battles, from the conquest of Italy to its fights against the Huns and invading Germanic tribes.
Naval battles were largely less important, although there are notable exception during, for instance, the First Punic War and others.
The Roman army battled first against its tribal neighbours and Etruscan towns within Italy, and later came to dominate much of the land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, including the provinces of Britannia and Asia Minor at the Empire's height.

According to one story, the philosopher Anaxarchus checked the vainglory of Alexander, when he aspired to the honours of divinity, by pointing to his wounded finger, saying, "See the blood of a mortal, not of a god." In another version Alexander himself pointed out the difference in response to a sycophantic soldier.
Caesar's military campaigns are known in detail from his own written Commentaries (Commentarii), and many details of his life are recorded by later historiographers like Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, Mestrius Plutarch, and Lucius Cassius Dio.

Etymology and origin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
In AD 350 the Franks lost a battle against general Julianus (and shortly after: emperor).
Gaius Julius Caesar had reported in his book “De bello Gallico” that he almost had lost the battle of the Sabis river against the Nervians.
This fact and the fact that Caesar allegedly wrote that the “Belgians are the bravest of all Gauls”; made the French historians believe in the 19th century that the Nervians had to be Gauls.
