Battle of the Weser River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of the Weser River, sometimes known as a first Battle of Minden, was fought in 16 between Roman legions commanded by Emperor Tiberius' heir and adopted son Germanicus, and an alliance of Germanic tribes commanded by Arminius.
Ancient sources identify the location as Idistaviso, but the precise location is unknown, save that it was on the right side of the Weser River, somewhere up between the cities of Minden and Hameln of present-day Germany.
The battle marked the end of a three-year campaign by Germanicus to restore the Roman frontier at the Elbe, lost in 9.

The battle in the Teutoburg Forest
Although it is certainly incorrect to see the battle in the Teutoburg Forest as part of the history of an eternal, quasi-natural antithesis between France and Germany, it can not be denied that the Roman defeat was indeed one of the most decisive and influential battles in world history.
The entire area east of the great river was in a process of rapid ethnic transformation, in which entire tribes migrated to other areas - sometimes in support of the Romans (e.g., the Batavians) or to evade trouble (e.g., the Marcomanni).
In the winter of 5/6, the army of Germania Superior (I Germanica and V Alaudae) marched to the east along the river Main and built a large base at Marktbreit.

Wells tends to dismiss classical descriptions of the battle, arguing that ancient historians suffered from the fact that they were not eyewitnesses, were often writing long after the fact, and were burdened by stereotyped and inaccurate notions of how the Germanic tribes fought.
He suggests that the battle did not take place over three days (as the writer Cassius Dio claimed 200 years later) but that the slaughter was essentially over in an hour, with the rest of the day devoted to capturing or killing the survivors.
The general course of the battle may have gone as he describes, but it is implausible to think that it was over as quickly as Wells believes.

In the forest, Hermann's forces ambushed the Romans: for three days the battle raged, with Hermann employing unusual guerrilla tactics, attacking and then suddenly withdrawing into the forest before the Romans could create their set battle formations, and then attacking again a while later from a completely different direction.
Hermann knew from his training in the Roman Army that the Romans did not have an adequate defense against this tactic, and after three days the Romans were exhausted: no sleep, constant attacks by German raiders and unfamiliar territory took their toll and the Roman lines broke.
Only a handful of Romans escaped from the forest to tell the tale: most were killed in combat and those who were captured suffered the fate of many Germans and Celts who had earlier fallen into Roman hands: they were killed on the spot.
