However, German sources begin the battle in mid-August 1940 and end it in May 1941, on the withdrawal of the bomber units in preparation for the attack on Russia.
In the early phases of the battle the RAF was hamstrung by its reliance on obsolete fighting drills.
The RAF roll of honour for the Battle of Britain recognises[2] 510 overseas pilots as flying at least one authorised operational sortie with an eligible unit of the Royal Air Force or Fleet Air Arm during the period 10 July to 31 October 1940.

Battle of the beams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of the Beams was a period in early World War II when Luftwaffe bombers started using radio navigation for night bombing.
In addition the beams of Lorenz were deliberately set wide enough that they could be easily picked up at some distance from the runway centerline, but this meant their accuracy at long ranges was fairly limited.
The two beams could be pointed to cross over the target, and the bombers would fly into the beam of one and ride it until they started hearing the tones from the other (in a second radio).

This squadron would later be re-numbered as the RCAF's 401 "City of Westmount" Squadron, in line with the RAF's policy of numbering Dominion units flying with the RAF in the 400-series to avoid confusion with similarly-numbered RAF units (this numbering system is still used by Canadian air squadrons to honour their World War II contributions).

 Proton Beams Battle Cancer
Proton beams -- produced by particle accelerators called cyclotrons or synchrotrons -- have produced better results than conventional radiation treatment against advanced cancers of the prostate, bone and eye, researchers told the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
"In contrast, the photon beams, used in standard radiation therapy, lose their energy as they pass through the body, so that the dose is maximum near the surface and decreases through the entire thickness of the body," he said.
Proton beam treatment of a type of cancer that attacks the base of the skull was effective for 92% of 180 patients, compared to about half of patients treated with standard radiation therapy, according to doctors at three Massachusetts facilities.

Planes would fly into the beams by listening what is the range on a cb radio to the signal to identify which frs radio range side of middle they were on, and then long range shortwave transmitting radio corrected until they were in the center.
The system was highly accurate and a battle of the beams broke out when United Kingdom intelligence services long range radio attempted, and then succeeded, in rendering the system useless.
The next major advance in radio frequency ranges "beam based" navigation system was the use two signals that varied not in sound, but in phase.

The fact that the beams basically do not get past the "object" (there is some faint evidence of beams above the object), whatever was at the beam convergence must have been optically quite dense.
Hence the horizontal width of the beam, W,(not perpendicular to the beam axis) would be W = D/sin(angle of elevation) = D/sin(30) = 2D for the assumed 30 degree elevation angle.
