  Scottish music from Battlefield Band
The band emerged at a time when Scottish music was still in the banal clutches of a media insisting on underlining cartoon stereotypes amid popular images of parlour room music and dance.
Alan Reid (keyboards/guitar/vocals) from Glasgow, one of the founder members of the band and an invaluable factor in their success and longevity, does much of the bands singing and songwriting, particularly on contemporary Scottish themes.
This is Battlefield Bands ninth album, and their music continued to intrigue and surprise.

There was quite a buzz around what the Battlefield Band would sound like when they showed up for a small crowd at the Tranzac Club in Toronto.
Having said that he does an excellent job of anchoring the Battlefield sound with his command of the small and Highland pipes.
After the show I had the feeling that the Battlefield sound would soon be changing.

Also, the program itself will not play the audio tracks of the CD, which seemed kind of strange to me. However, for any fan of Battlefield Band, these problems are clearly not very important, in light of all of the information that the program provides.

The Battlefield’s longest serving member, Alan Reid, had been playing with Rob Van Sante at An Lanntair, and the opportunity to grab an interview with the newest and the longest serving members of the band before the Batties head out on a tour to celebrate their 35 years in business, is too good to miss.
The band was started by Brian McNeil and at that time they called themselves ‘Harvest’ but they changed their name to Battlefield Band after the district of Glasgow.
And around that table, Ali with his fiddle and Mike with his pipes, is the great strength of Battlefield Band’s music - it’s never been too far away from the session, never cut itself from the life blood of the intimate and spontaneous.

Battlefield Band are working with Dave Ramage, Artistic Director at the Maltings Arts Centre in Berwick Upon Tweed (a historic town just south of the Scottish Border), to bring a weekend of concerts, dancing, workshops, tuition and exhibitions to the town from the 8th -10th July 2005.
Battlefield Band were very proud to win the award for 'Best Live Act' at last years inagaural Scots Trad Music Awards and were especially pleased to be invited back to perform at this awards ceremony as due to touring commitments they could not collect their award in person last year.
The band were keen to create this award as a a way of thanking the international community on behalf of the many Scots musicians who carry Scottish music to audiences throughout the world.

After almost thirty years on the road and having gone through several transformations it is amazing that the band still surprises and delights and this album is no exception.
This is a brilliant idea and I was delighted to see some of the old faces from the bands previous incarnations.
It reminded me of a session in the Quarterdeck in the Fiddlers in Portaferry when I was treated to some amazing playing by a Dr McDonald from Cape Breton Island who turned out to be the brother of Iain McDonald then playing with the band.

Originally released in very limited quantities and only to the media for promotional purposes, Preview has since been reissued as a makeweight to the 1994 CD release of the Battlefield Band's 1979 album, Stand Easy.
Its four tracks offered an introduction to the band's new lineup at the time, which found singer and dulcimer player Sylvia Barnes taking the place of Jenny Clark and a new addition in the form of guitarist Jim Barnes.
Jim Barnes thickened and filled out the band's sound nicely, and Sylvia's voice is, if anything, even stronger than Clark's had been; she blends beautifully with Alan Reid on the gorgeous "Rantin' Rovin' Robin and the lilting "Bonny Lass Come Ower the Burn." The two instrumental tracks are no less lovely.

Alan Reid (the only remaining original member of the band) has always played a major part with his interpretations of traditional songs and can now add to the canon the gently funky ‘Earl Of Errol’.
Compositional skills of the band are another forte and between them Katz, White and Reid are quite formidable.
All of the material presented on this album is of the highest quality and I’m sure many of the new tunes will find themselves being soaked into the tradition and, as such, a finer compliment to any artist I can’t think of.
