The two battles of Kizugawaguchi (literally mouth of the Kizu River) were fought during Oda Nobunaga's attempted sieges of the Ishiyama Hongan-ji in Osaka.
The Hongan-ji was the primary fortress of the Ikkō-ikki, mobs of warrior monks, priests, and farmers who opposed Oda's rule.
In the first battle, in 1576, the Mōri defeated Kuki Yoshitaka's fleet, breaking the blockade and supplying the fortress.

 The Oda Generals
This brother of Oda Nobunaga was killed alongside Mori Yoshinari in battle with the Asai and Asakura near Ôtsu in 1570.
He was present at many of Nobunaga's battles (including Anegawa 1570, Nagashino 1575, the Honganji Campaign 1570-1580, Tedorigawa 1577, and the 2nd Invasion of Iga 1581) and was named one of the administrators of Kyoto after Nobunaga entered that city in 1568.
He was in the forefront of the fighting at the Battle of Anegawa in 1570 and was killed in action.

The clans who battled the emishi did so in part (we can assume) in the hopes of securing sizable rewards of land in the newly colonized areas, and to maintain these in the face of emishi resistance, arms would need to be kept.
Outright battles between the Enryakuji and Mii-dera were common during the later Heian Period, and saw the later burned to the ground numerous times.
There would be no further avenues of retreat should the coming battle go against them, and their earlier defeats no doubt sat havily on their shoulders.
