Battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During World War II battleships became largely obsolete because of the greater range and striking power of the aircraft carrier, although some continued to be used for shore bombardment and as missile platforms until the late 1990s.
The main battleship nations during this period were Britain, France and Russia, plus newcomers Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, while Turkey and Spain built small numbers of armoured frigates and cruisers, and Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands built smaller "coastal battleships" (pantserschip) of up to 5,000 tons.
Battleships still in existence as museums include the American USS Massachusetts, North Carolina, Alabama and Texas, the British HMS Mary Rose, Victory and Warrior, the Japanese Mikasa, the Swedish Vasa, the Dutch Buffel and Schorpioen, and the Chilean Huascar.

Queen Elizabeth class battleship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Queen Elizabeth-class battleships were five super-dreadnoughts of the Royal Navy, named in honour of Elizabeth I of England.
The Queen Elizabeths were the first battleships to be armed with 15 inch /42 Mk 1 guns (381 mm), and they forced the Germans to alter the armament of the Bayern class armament from its original 12 inch (305 mm) guns to 15 inch.
In World War II, the class also performed with distinction, though their age, and the increasing obsolescence of the battleship in the face of air power, was beginning to show.

Battleships (BB): Battleships were the primary warships in the era of ship-to-ship combat with guns.
Battleships were intended to engage in ship-on-ship or fleet-on-fleet combat with forces of enemy battleships.
Battleship armor was generally heavy enough to protect the ship against it's own main armament.

And yet, throughout the war years, battleships remained at the heart of the fleets - escorting Atlantic convoys, bombarding invasion beaches and playing a dramatic role at Leyte Gulf, the greatest of all sea battles.
For the battleship was the ultimate embodiment of naval might - awesome firepower, massive construction and heavy armor combined to dominate the surface of the oceans.
For the next class of battleship to follow Pennsylvania, the General Board wished to abandon the latter design for a more powerful design armed with 16in funs, having heavier protection and with a 6in caliber secondary armament.

She immediately made all earlier battleships obsolete with her ability to use speed to keep her distance and her awesome battery of large guns to concentrate lethal firepower at long range.
British battle cruisers were big and carried big guns, like battleships, but they had far less armor than battleships and their higher speed was intended to be their protection.
Secondary armament, intended to ward off enemy destroyers, changed so often and so much that it is equally ignored in these sketches.

The battleship Rodney (Captain Frederick H. Dalrymple-Hamilton) was at sea to the west of Ireland on her way to Boston for repairs with destroyers Somali, Tartar, Mashona, and Eskimo of the 6th Flotilla escorting the liner Britannic (27,759 tons), now used as a troop transport.
The battleship Ramillies (Captain Arthur D. Read) to the South of Cape Farewell was also instructed to leave the convoy she was escorting (HX-127) and "proceed so as to make contact with enemy from westwards, subsequently placing enemy between Ramillies and C.-in-C".
Today, now in the 21st century, the battleship era is long gone, but the story of the Bismarck and her brave crew still fascinates thousands of people and her legend is still very much alive.

Previously, battleships had been armed with an array of guns of varying caliber in main, secondary and tertiary batteries.
The Dreadnought, however, was armed with ten 12-inch guns and no secondary armament, marking a new trend in naval thought: a warship with all big caliber guns, which were both more destructive and of greater range, could concentrate all her fire power on an enemy from long range and destroy her from a great distance.
In such a long range engagement, the battle would be over long before the enemy came within range of a ship's secondary armaments--in short, the ship with the largest battery of big guns would win.

The battleship's main armament consisted of eight 15-inch guns in four two-gun turrets and, beside the superb optical ranging equipment possessed by German warships, Bismarck was fitted with a "radio-telemeter", a 90-cm wavelength type of radar, for range calculating.
She was a battle-cruiser, not a battleship: longer and leaner, with the same broadside of eight 15-inch guns as the German battleship, but with less emphasis on armoured protection.

Nonetheless, the idea of battleship versus battleship combat is almost moot since the primrary cause of death or damage to battleships was from the air.

Thus, the pocket battleship concept was obsolete early in the war.
The power plant of the Deutschland class also makes one wonder about the technical quality of the pocket battleships too, since their typical speed of 25 knots was not very fast compared to other heavy cruisers.
