The World of Battletoads - The Ultimate Guide to the Battletoads Series
I have never finished a Battletoads game on it's original system, but I have finished them all of them on emulators.
The Battletoads games are all very hard but a lot of fun to play.
Although the original Battletoads game was released over 16 years ago, there remains a loyal fan base that continues to hold out hope that Rare will realize the great potential of this series and consider making a brand new game for one of today's next generation systems.

In Battletoads, one or two players could play as musclebound, stylish humanoid toads named Rash and Zitz in their quest to rescue their comrade, Pimple, and his girl, Angelica, from the evil Dark Queen.
Like many beat-em-ups, Battletoads will force you to restart a level if you have to use a continue, but to add insult to injury, it will also often force to you start a level section over as a result of dying once, so your deaths can't even be productive, so to speak.
Battletoads has loads of personality and charm, and a large fun factor, but be prepared for a very challenging game.

The Armchair Empire - Classic Gaming: Battletoads in Battlemaniacs (SNES)
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs was Rare/Trademark's attempt to boost the award-winning, inspiring Battletoads from the NES to the SNES, with brighter graphics and more insane playability - but even with the upgrades, this "sequel" feels empty and not nearly as fun as the 8-bit original.
I don't remember there being any plot in the first Battletoads - you were just a big mean mutant toad thing, who ran from level to level taking part in all a manner of arcade fighting sequences and different forms of gameplay.
Battletoads in Battlemaniacs copies the routine of five of the original Battletoads levels and notches up the graphics.

As difficult as it is, Battletoads is really not a game suited to speed-running--more of the game than you realize upon playing through it scrolls at a fixed (Turbo Tunnel) or at least pseudo-forced (The gear sections of the Terra Tubes) speed.
Nonetheless, I AM speed-running here (Though not particularly well, admittedly--this was done with the intention of it being the inaugural record for the game at Twin Galaxies), and I figured most people would be amazed to simply see the game beaten legitimately.
I opt to complete the level rather than warp to level 5, as this is the route the tool-assisted guys use..say what you will about tool-assisted videos, but those guys have done their homework as much if not more than any speedrunner.
